The Islamia University of Bahawalpur hosted the Conference of Parties 2023 on Climate Change jointly under COP IN MY CITY 2023 initiative of Youth for Climate Action organized by UNDP , UNICEF, UN Women and Social Organisations, Clean and Green Pakistan, School Education Department South Punjab, and Divisional Administration Bahawalpur.In his keynote address Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Dr. Ehtesham Anwar said that it is the need of the hour to educate the new generation to protect them from the harms of climate change, and it is our responsibility to provide a clean environment to the future generation.
In this regard, the green book has been made a part of the syllabus to face the challenges faced by the school students as a result of climate change. Dr. Ehtesham Anwar said that the green book for the seventh grade contains the curriculum regarding climate change through the efforts of the South Punjab School Education Department.
He said that the role of developed countries in causing environmental pollution is more dominant while developing countries are mostly affected by it. He said that with the help of students in the schools of South Punjab, steps have been taken to plant miyawaki, kitchen gardening, and protect the environment from pollution.
He said that climate challenges can be faced by connecting the new generation with simple lifestyles and cultural values.Dr. Javed Iqbal former principal, Quaid e Azam Medical College, said that along with the government, social organizations and civil society should play their role in creating awareness about climate change. Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti said that in all campuses of Islamia University Bahawalpur, programs have been organized to encourage students motivating them to take environment friendly measures.The Islamia University of Bahawalpur has established an SDG’s Collaboration Centre to work on UN development goals and more emphasis is being given on SDGs relevant to environment sustainability.
