FINALLY, some western countries have started to accept Islamophobia as a reality because it is only then a course of action can be decided to curb it that poses a real threat to societies.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a tweet on Saturday said that Islamophobia is not acceptable at any cost and vowed to make his country safer for Muslims.
He also announced his plan to appoint a special representative to combat Islamophobia.
While Canada presents itself as one of the liberal states under PM Justin Trudeau, anti-Islam hate crimes have posed a major threat to both communal peace and Muslim lives in the North American country.
According to a report by National Council of Canadian Muslims, aggression against Muslim community has become systematic ever since 9/11 attacks.
Just last year, a Pakistani Canadian family became victim of this hate crime when a 21-year old Canadian attacker ran over the family with his pick-up truck in Ontario.
Given this situation, statement of the Canadian PM is very encouraging and will definitely be a source of solace for Muslim community in Canada.
Over the acts of few individuals, it is really deplorable that Islam and their followers were portrayed as terrorists and extremists by western countries in the wake of 9/11 attacks.
The venom that was filled against Muslims is now coming to the fore and assuming dangerous situation even for western societies themselves.
This needs course correction.
Instead of resorting to policies that give impression of Islamophobia, dialogues should be arranged at different levels in order to remove misunderstandings.
Those fanning hate under the garb of freedom of expression should be discouraged and strict action against them needs to be taken as nobody can be allowed to hurt sentiments of others.
