The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945 after the failure of League of Nations in preventing the outbreak of World War II. The UN was established to achieve goal of harmony, peace, stability, cooperation, friendly-relations and truce among nations internationally. It is worth considering that if the UN has succeeded in maintaining peace, prosperity, stability and security around the globe. Firstly, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has US, China, Russia, UK and France as five permanent members, who have been granted veto power to thwart any council resolution.
Unfortunately, this veto is being misused for their own interests and actions. For example, Kashmir crisis, Syrian crisis, Yemen crisis, forcible occupation of Palestinian land by Israeli Jews supported by the US, annexation of Crimea in 2014 by Russia, Rwanda genocide, Middle East crisis and global terrorism. Most importantly, these are global issues that have not been solved for decades. Moreover, many western countries are supporting proxy wars by supplying weapons of mass destruction to groups and countries to maintain their influence within a specified region and aggravating the circumstances excessively. Thus the UN is being misused by Veto-wielding powers.
Finally, the UN charter must be amended seriously to help resolve global issues and therefore UN must be made effective and efficient to achieve sustainable developmental goals (SDGs) like peace, prosperity, stability, security, cooperation and goodwill among the nations globally.
