Illicit arms flow

Speaking at a UN Security Council Arria-formula meeting Pakistani diplomat Syed Atif Raza called for an international crackdown on illegal flow of arms to terrorist organisations.

The weapons left behind in Afghanistan after sudden withdrawal of US forces have found their way into the hands of groups like Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), increasing security threats to Pakistan and the wider region.

These weapons have enabled these groups to launch deadly cross-border attacks targeting both civilians and security forces.

The call made by Pakistan is both urgent and crucial.

This crisis not only poses threat to Pakistan but also has implications for global peace and security.

Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns about the influx of these illicit arms and it is vital that international community does not let this issue fade into obscurity.

The surge in terrorist attacks inside Pakistan, which have increasingly targeted civilian and security forces alike, demonstrates pressing need to take swift and decisive action.

It is essential that global partners unite to address this crisis by preventing further access to weapons and dismantling the black market that fuels proliferation of arms to these terrorist groups.

The Pakistani diplomat also raised an important point that terrorist outfits lack industrial infrastructure to produce advanced weapons.

This raises serious questions about the involvement of state actors who are facilitating flow of sophisticated weaponry into the hands of these groups.

Such complicity cannot be ignored, as it directly implicates those who may be enabling continuation of terrorism in the region.

The illicit flow of weapons to terrorist organisations is not just a regional issue, it is a global one.

The world cannot afford to ignore grave risks posed by groups like the TTP and BLA, whose actions are fuelled by an unchecked arsenal of advanced weaponry.

If we are to safeguard peace and security for all, we must act decisively to cut off the sources of these weapons and hold accountable not only terrorist organisations but also those who facilitate and support them while rising above any expediency.
