ISLAMABAD – The federal government decided to take the political allies into confidence to amend the PECA law with an aim to tighten control over digital content, the sources close to the development said on Monday.
The senior government officials revealed that the proposed amendments could be finalized and presented to Parliament for approval next week.
The officials said that the proposed changes to the PECA law included regulating online content, investigating violations and establishing two new authorities with extensive powers for legal action against offenders.
Separately, the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill is set to be presented in the National Assembly today.
Under the proposed law, two key institutions would be established.
The National Digital Commission, headed by the Prime Minister, will include the chief ministers of all four provinces as well as the heads of the State Bank, FBR, and PTA. The second institution, the Pakistan Digital Authority, will be led by prominent experts.
The sources said that the primary objective of the proposed law is to create a digital identity for every citizen. The Digital Nation Pakistan Act 2024 would provide uninterrupted access to essential services, ranging from birth certificates, educational and health records, land and asset details to business information, police certificates and national ID cards.
The officials said that the federal government had already transitioned 65% of its operations to e-governance.
