ISLAMABAD – The federal government is all set to introduce The Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, 2024 in the National Assembly on Monday (today) focusing to centralize data related to social, economic and governance aspects.
The bill aimed at establishing a digital identity [ID] for citizens.
A key feature of the bill is the introduction of a digital identity for each citizen, encompassing data on health, assets, and other social parameters. This initiative aims to streamline access to government services including those related to ID cards, land records, birth certificates and health documentation.
The digitization drive will also focus on reforming government departments, equipping them with strategic, goal-oriented plans to improve public service delivery.
This proposed legislation is designed to transform Pakistan into a digital nation, promoting the development of a digital society, economy, and governance systems.
The bill, which was approved by the federal cabinet earlier this year in June, seeks to modernize the country’s economy and enhance e-governance.
As part of the initiative, the government plans to establish two new bodies: the National Digital Commission (NDC), which will be chaired by the prime minister and include the four provincial chief ministers along with leaders from key organizations such as the State Bank, FBR, and PTA; and the Pakistan Digital Authority, which will be overseen by top experts from the industry.
