Minister for Local Government and President of PPP Karachi, Saeed Ghani, has expressed his personal opinion against banning any political party, emphasizing that every party has a right to peaceful protest within legal boundaries. Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the Railway Ground, Kala Pul, where the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is set to hold its 57th Foundation Day rally, he criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), calling it synonymous with chaos and accusing its founder of lacking political maturity.
Ghani stated, “Peaceful protest is everyone’s right, but using it as a cover for unrest, terrorism, or lawlessness must be prevented.” Highlighting PPP’s legacy since its establishment in 1967, Ghani said the party has consistently stood firm against military dictatorships and remains deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. The Karachi rally, to be held at the Railway Ground for the first time, will feature a video address by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, along with speeches from central and provincial leaders.
Events celebrating the party’s anniversary will also take place across 150 districts nationwide. Saeed Ghani explained that the venue was chosen after their request to hold the event at Nishtar Park was denied due to prior bookings. He noted that PPP has faced unparalleled challenges over the decades, enduring hardships no other political party or its members have experienced. “From fighting dictators to empowering ordinary citizens, PPP has always worked for the people,” Ghani said.
“The party dismantled the feudal-centric politics of drawing rooms and brought decision-making power to the masses.” He also pointed to PPP’s landmark achievements, such as drafting the 1973 Constitution and granting provinces autonomy through the 18th Amendment, as unmatched in Pakistan’s political history. Responding to questions about PTI, Ghani labeled the party as inherently disorganized and claimed its leadership aims to create instability in the country.
Referring to the past, he said, “PTI’s rhetoric of jihad and chaos has always been clear. Their aim was never democratic progress but to sow discord.” He dismissed PTI’s claims of political freedom, suggesting that Imran Khan continues to receive preferential treatment.
“Even now, it seems he is someone’s favorite, as he benefits from court relief while creating chaos under the guise of freedom,” Ghani said. Addressing a potential ban on PTI, Ghani clarified that while he cannot speak on behalf of PPP, he personally believes banning any political party is not a solution. “We need to address the root causes of issues rather than banning parties,” he said. Ghani also raised concerns over governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation. While he acknowledged that governor’s rule is a constitutional provision, he stressed it should only be implemented in extreme circumstances.
Responding to a query about PPP’s relationship with the federal government, he noted several unresolved issues and assured that PPP’s Sindh leadership is addressing them on every forum. He reiterated that the Sindh government prioritizes the interests of its people and will continue to uphold them through constitutional and legal means. The PPP’s Foundation Day rally in Karachi will conclude with cake-cutting, fireworks, and a vibrant musical program featuring party anthems.
