Pakistan Army has announced court martial of Lieutenant-General retired Faiz Hameed, the former head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), who has been arrested in a case related to Top City Housing scheme.

As military’s took action against former ISI chief over multiple breaches of Army Act after his retirement – and this is the first time in the country’s history that court-martial proceedings have been brought against former chief of ISI.

Pakistan Army delivered a strong message with this move, showing its disciplined and organized nature, with a stringent accountability mechanism. This is not the first time when such actions were conducted, with several similar instances occurred, back in the day.

Several high-ranking military officers in Pakistan have faced legal and disciplinary actions over the years for various offenses. In 1997, Admiral Mansoorul Haq was arrested for accepting bribes but was released in 2001 after a plea deal. Former DG ISI Lieutenant General Asad Durrani was court-martialed and sentenced to life imprisonment for writing a book, though his sentence was later reduced.

In 2019, Lieutenant General Javed Iqbal received a life sentence for espionage, while Brigadier Rizwan was sentenced to 14 years for links with foreign entities. Other notable cases include Colonel Shahid, Major General Tajammul Hussain, and Brigadier Mustansir Bala, who were all court-martialed and received significant prison terms or dismissals from the army.

More recently, several officers, including former Lieutenant Colonel Akbar Hussain and Major (retired) Adil Raja, were court-martialed for anti-army social media activities. After the May 9 incident, around 15 officers faced disciplinary action.
