KARACHI – Federal Board of Revenue has directed telecom companies and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to block mobile phone SIMs of over half a million non-filers as authorities tightened noose around tax evadors.

The extreme step was initiated to widen tax collection as government pushed stern reforms.

As per the orders, mobile SIMs of tax evaders will remain blocked until restored by the Inland Revenue commissioner who according to FBR holds jurisdiction.

Earlier, the country’s apex tax collection authority identified around 2 million non-filers, but mobile service providing companies told the tax authority that they could not afford to block such large number of SIMs.

After consultation, it was decided that around half million mobile phone SIMs would be blocked.

In its order, FBR said PTa and all telecom operators are required to ensure the compliance of this ITGO [Income Tax General Order] with immediate effect. It also directed PTA to report on the matter by May 15, 2024.

FBR said these 506,000 individuals are financially able to file income tax returns, but they are defying all reminders and intimidation.
