Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were among the Premier League clubs who successfully traversed the 4th round of the FA Cup to continue their journies in the competition.
Manchester United vs Reading:
United faced Reading at home in the final 4th round encounter of the night of the FA Cup with Casemiro’s brace and Fred’s goal giving them a comfortable 3-1 win over the championship side.
United manager Erik ten Hag again fielded a strong cup lineup, three days after doing the same in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal with Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro all named in the startling lineup.
Despite all the odds, Reading managed to keep United’s well-oiled machine at bay for the opening 45 minutes and had some good fortune as Rashford’s goal was ruled out by VAR in the 35th minute.
Casemiro eventually put his side ahead in the 54th minute after being played through by Antony, the Brazilian chipped a wonderful shot over Joe Lumley in Reading’s goal. Just 4 minutes later he added his second with a shot from well outside the box that curled into the back of the net.
Andy Carrol’s dismissal in the 65th minute practically ended the visitor’s chances of making a miraculous comeback and Fred scored their third just a minute later to seal the game.
Amadou Salif Mbengue managed to get on the scoresheet to give the Reading fan’s something to cheer about on their trip.
Tottenham vs Preston North End:
Son Heung-Min scored two and the debuting Arnaut Danjuma added one as Tottenham defeated second-tier Preston North End 3-0 away from home to reach the last 16 of the competition.
In other 4th round FA Cup matches, Southampton defeated Blackpool 2-0, Leeds United beat Accrington 3-1, Leicester beat Walsall 1-0 while Fulham played out a 1-1 draw against Sunderland.
