Sindh Health Minister, Dr. AzraFazalPechuho, announced the commencement of a special vaccination campaign in areas witnessing a surge in measles cases. Dr. AzraPechuho disclosed that a vaccination drive will be initiated from May 13 to 25, focusing on typhoid immunization. The campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 8.9 million children aged six months to 15 years across Sindh.

The resurgence of measles cases in various regions can be attributed to missed vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health systems faced overwhelming challenges, leading to disruptions in routine immunization schedules for preventable diseases. Expressing concerns, Dr. Azra highlighted the urgency of filling the immunization gaps to prevent measles outbreaks.

The World Health Organization’s Natasha Crowcroft emphasized the need to swiftly address these gaps to prevent measles from exploiting vulnerabilities in immunization programs. Dr. Azra also addressed challenges faced by patients at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) due to capacity constraints. She reassured that the situation would improve upon the completion of the children’s heart disease hospital. Responding to queries, the minister indicated plans to engage with the administration of Jinnah Hospital regarding patient fees.

Additionally, she announced arrangements for robotic machines at Jinnah Hospital and the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). Expressing reservations about the management of the Sindh Government’s Children Hospital in NaganChowrangi, Dr. Azra highlighted the government’s efforts to regain control from the NGO managing the facility. She noted the absence of a forensic audit, underscoring the need for transparency in hospital operations.
