ISLAMABAD – Dozens of Pakistanis who drowned in a boat accident in Greece are still missing, confirmed by Pakistani Ambassador Amir Aftab.

Addressing the press conference in Greece, he said the embassy will send back the bodies of the deceased Pakistanis at its own expense.

He added that dozens of Pakistanis are still missing from the boat accident. The rescue operation at the site is still ongoing, but hopes for their survival have faded.

Aftab said five boats carrying illegal migrants, including Pakistan nationals, left from Libya for Italy. However, one of the boat, which was carrying 80 Pakistanis, met the accident first.

He added that a large number of the missing Pakistanis are young children.

On Monday, the Foreign Office announced that four Pakistani nationals had been identified among the dead in Saturday’s incidents of capsized boats in the south of Crete Island of Greece.

In a statement, the Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, “We announce with deep sorrow that, as per the latest information shared by the Greek authorities, four Pakistani nationals have been identified among the dead in Saturday’s incidents of capsized boats in the south of Crete Island of Greece.”

“Our Mission in Athens is in contact with the Greek authorities to facilitate the survivors and repatriate the dead bodies,” she added.
