Commissioner’s allegations

THE explosive allegations made by Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha have further added to country’s political uncertainty and turmoil. Mr Chatha, speaking to reporters outside Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, asserted that results of the February 8 general elections in Rawalpindi division were “manipulated” under his watch. These allegations come as a shockwave, implicating not only local authorities but also higher echelons of electoral process, including the Chief Election Commissioner. He did not even spare the Chief Justice of Pakistan who in fact has nothing to do with the election process.

Serious questions arise as to why these allegations were not brought to light on the election day itself, raising suspicions about timing and motives behind his disclosure. Whether there is any substance or malicious intent behind the entire episode needs to be fully investigated. The implications of Chatha’s allegations cannot be overstated. They have further eroded trust in the electoral process. With each passing day, the temperature of uncertainty is rising, exacerbating concerns about stability of country’s political landscape. The general elections were anticipated to bring political stability, but instead, the opposite seems to be occurring. No single political party has secured a majority, particularly for formation of a government at the Centre. Moreover, there appears to be a lack of enthusiasm among political parties to form a government. Protests are also taking place against alleged poll rigging. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) held protests on Saturday, while the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) the other day organised a large public gathering against election results. Additionally, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) has taken to the streets. In this context, Chatha’s allegations have only served to deepen the complexity of political landscape. Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa have strongly rejected their involvement in election rigging. The ECP has also announced to form a high-level committee to investigate Chatha’s allegations. This investigation must be comprehensive and transparent, with its findings made public, to restore confidence in the electoral process. Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has also emphasised the need for a thorough investigation to address concerns about integrity and transparency of the electoral process. Moreover, they caution against baseless criticism of judiciary, highlighting the importance of upholding sanctity of state institutions. We will also suggest the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of Chatha’s allegations. Given existing petition regarding election rigging before the apex court, this matter warrants serious consideration.

The country cannot afford political instability, especially in the face of pressing economic and security challenges. All stakeholders must prioritise restoration of trust in the electoral process and commit to upholding democratic principles. We will have to find a path to navigate through this tumultuous period and pave the way for stability and progress.
