China names research centre after Pakistani

CHINA’S Hunan University of Medicine (HNUM) has named its newly inaugurated research centre after Pakistani Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary. Naming the research centre after Dr. Iqbal Choudhary is a significant honour, since this recognition not only highlights his achievements but also strengthens the academic and scientific ties between China and Pakistan. Dr. Choudhary is a distinguished Pakistani academic known for his extensive contributions to the field of organic chemistry, who has made significant advancements in natural product chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and the development of new drugs. The erudite scholar earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Karachi and has been associated with the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi, where he has served in various capacities, including as the Director.

He has authored over 1,200 research papers, 76 books, and 40 chapters in international books. His work has been cited extensively, reflecting his impact on the scientific community. Dr. Choudhary has received numerous national and international awards, including the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz from the Government of Pakistan. He has also been recognized by various scientific organizations worldwide. The renowned professor has played a pivotal role in fostering scientific collaborations between Pakistan and other countries, particularly in the fields of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. His leadership at ICCBS has helped establish it as the foremost research institution in the region.

His recognition by HNUM is a testament to his outstanding contributions to science and his role in strengthening international academic and research collaborations. Dr. Choudhary is also known for his dedication to mentoring young scientists and researchers. He has supervised numerous Ph.D. and M.Phil. students, contributing to the development of the next generation of scientists. The newly inaugurated research centre named after Professor Dr. Iqbal Muhammad Choudhry is a significant milestone as it marks the first time that a Pakistani scientist has honoured in this manner at the HNUM. The research centre spans 13,000 square feet, housing 17 full-time researchers dedicated to advancing scientific collaboration between Pakistan and China. Professor Choudhry has been instrumental in the promotion of collaborative projects between the two countries, and his contributions to various scientific endeavours have been widely recognized. Founded in 1912, HNUM is a national public medical university in China, offering around 20 undergraduate and graduate medical programmes with more than 4,500 faculty members and 14,425 full-time students.

Dr Choudhary has, in the past, advocated for fostering cooperation between Chinese and Pakistani scientists, particularly for establishing research centres between the two countries. Currently, he serves as vice president of the World Academy of Sciences for Central and South Asia. Additionally, he is also a research fellow of scientific organisations such as the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) and the Royal Society of Chemistry in London. The naming of the research centre after Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary is not directly a part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) but it aligns with the broader goals of strengthening scientific and technological collaboration between China and Pakistan, which is a key aspect of CPEC. The remarkable honour bestowed on the Pakistani academic speaks volumes for the recognition of hard work, merit and meticulous research by China.
