ONTARIO – Canada saw huge increase in number of international students in recent years, and these students contribute to the economy, but influx of international students also led to challenges, and students have to work to cover the high costs of tuition, accommodation, and living expenses.

From the start of May 2024, Canadian authorities ended previous policy allowing international students to work more than 20 hours per week.

The recent announcement marks end of temporary policy allowing international students in Canada to work unlimited hours. Starting this fall, a new limit of 24 hours per week will be enforced, aligning with similar policies in other nations.

The new policy was imposed to make sure that students prioritize their studies while still having the opportunity to work if necessary, as it can led to suffering in academic performance.

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller emphasized that while working off campus can provide valuable experience and help with expenses, the primary focus for international students should be on their studies, not work.

He however mentioned protecting international students from financial vulnerability and maintain the integrity of the International Student Program.

In a similar development, international students enrolled in college programs will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.
