NEW YORK – US President Joe Biden finally speaks up about the catastrophic situation in Gaza at the UN General Assembly.
In his final speech, Biden said innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip are in a place which is no less than a hell and Israel and Hamas should reach a truce now. He cautioned against a full-scale war in Lebanon, stressing that such an escalation would be detrimental to all parties involved.
Biden called for diplomatic efforts to address the rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. He urged both sides to finalize the terms of a cease-fire and a hostage deal, which has received backing from the U.N. Security Council.
At the moment, a cease-fire is a top priority for the White House, he said, adding particularly as nearly 100 hostages are still believed to be held by Hamas. Biden also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Ukraine in its fight against the Kremlin.
His speech on United Nations floor is critical, noting the increasing number of global crises demanding urgent attention. US position on Israeli-Palestinian conflict diverges from the majority of the General Assembly, which recently passed a resolution calling for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories, a move the US opposed.
Israeli attacks in Gaza Strip killed 40 more Palestinians, raising the death toll to 41,431, with 95,818 injured. Despite UN cease-fire resolution, Israel’s offensive continues, displacing nearly the entire population and causing severe resource shortages.
