AC Milan continued their bid for a second consecutive title going with a narrow win over Hellas Verona while Napoli moved clear at the top of the Serie A table with a win over Bologna.
Sandro Toanli was the hero for AC Milan with his late goal securing a 2-1 away win at Hellas Verona after Miguel Veloso’s own goal had been cancelled home side’s Koray Gunter.
Milan took just nine minutes to find the opening goal with Veloso deflecting Rafael Leao’s cross into his own net before Olivier Giroud sent his effort wide just two minutes later. Their lead lasted just ten minutes however as Koray Gunter’s shot hit defender Matteo Gabbia and beat keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.
The visitors resumed their hunt for the win immediately after halftime with Lorenzo Montipò denying Ante Rebic in a one-on-one before Verona replied by rattling the crossbar in the 56th minute through Roberto Piccoli.
Tonali eventually found the winner when he ghosted into the box before being found by Rebic and the midfielder calmly slotted the ball home past Montipò.
The win takes Milan third on the table with 23 points while Verona remains in the relegation place in the 18th spot.
Meanwhile, in another contest, Jorge Sampoli’s Napoli opened a three-point lead at the top of the Serie A table with a 3-2 win over Bologna.
Napoli’s Juan Jesus and Hirving Lozano and Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee and Musa Barrow had cancelled each other’s strikes out before Victor Osimhen found the winner in the 69th minute.
Napoli leads the charts with 26 points ahead of Atlanta (24) after 10 games.
