IN what could be called a major milestone in the automobile sector, the first locally produced electric car stemming from the collective efforts of Dice Foundation, universities and the private sector has been launched in Karachi.
Equipped with advanced features, the important feature of the car is that all its components have been developed in Pakistan.
The booking for the car named NUR-E 75 will be opened to the public in late 2024 and it is also likely to be exported.
The revolution of environment-friendly vehicles is making its way in the global auto industry, and it is a matter of satisfaction that Pakistan has also taken a first step in this regard which will also go a long way in improving economic condition of the country.
Promoting locally manufactured electric vehicles is need of the hour as it will save the foreign exchange currently being spent on the imported fuel.
Hence, the government should extend maximum incentives to the local manufacturing of these cars whilst also ensuring the electricity generation is also shifted to indigenous resources to meet the growing demands of the future and keep the electricity’s prices under check.
The way universities have contributed in five-seater hatchback electric car manufacturing is really commendable.
It is through better collaboration between the centres of education and the industries; we can also create knowledge and achieve many more milestones on the pattern of developed world.
We are confident that the stakeholders in electric car project will not be far away from also producing Sedan and SUVs.
At present, the electric or hybrid cars being imported from other countries are really beyond the reach of a middle class person.
It is really important that the prices of locally manufactured electric cars are kept at reasonable levels so that the people could easily shift to it.
The success of this project in fact will encourage many new entrants in this particular field and could also fetch a sizeable amount of foreign direct investment.
This will strengthen industrial base as well as provide immense job opportunities to the youth.
