A delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami Sindh, led by provincial leader and former MNA Muhammad Hussain Mehanti, met with Sardar Abdul Rahim, General Secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) and spokesperson of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), on Tuesday. During the meeting, they invited him to participate in the upcoming water conference scheduled for January 26 in Hyderabad.
The conference, organized by Jamaat-e-Islami Sindh, will address water shortages and the controversial construction of six canals from the Indus River. Sardar Abdul Rahim accepted the invitation and assured his participation. Speaking on the occasion, Sardar Abdul Rahim remarked, “Water has become a matter of life and death for Sindh.
The severe water scarcity has already caused irreparable damage to agriculture and the economy. Further encroachments on our water will destroy Sindh entirely, with Karachi also facing dire consequences.” He also accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of double standards, stating that their anti-Sindh policies have been exposed to the public. He announced that a meeting of the “Save the River Movement” has been called on January 25 to develop a strategy against the exploitation of Sindh’s water and land resources.
Jamaat-e-Islami Sindh leader Muhammad Hussain Mehanti expressed concern over the federal government’s insistence on constructing six canals despite widespread protests from the people of Sindh. He said, “The stubbornness of the authorities in pushing forward with this project has jeopardized national unity. The construction of these canals is a violation of the IRSA Act and the Constitution.
