Book launch at KCFR explores Pakistan’s nuclear strategy, diplomacy

The Karachi Council on Foreign Relations hosted the launch of The Security Imperative: Pakistan’s Nuclear Deterrence and Diplomacy, a thought-provoking book written by the distinguished diplomat, Ambassador Zamir Akram. The book offers an in-depth exploration of Pakistan’s nuclear program, providing insights into its strategic journey amidst immense international challenges and pressures.

Ambassador Akram’s work draws on historical context, first-hand accounts, and exclusive interviews to offer readers a profound understanding of Pakistan’s nuclear strategy and its broader geopolitical implications. Renowned for his illustrious career in diplomacy, Akram presents a nuanced and unapologetic perspective on South Asia’s nuclear dynamics, challenging globally dominant narratives.

The book has received accolades from policymakers and experts, including Dr. Anatol Lieven, author, Dr. Antoine Levesques, and Riaz H. Khokhar, former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan. During the launch event, Ambassador Sardar Masood Khan delivered a welcome address, introducing the author and highlighting the importance of the book in deepening understanding of Pakistan’s strategic priorities and its impact on regional stability.  He stressed that the book is an essential addition to academic and policy discussions on nuclear diplomacy.

Khalid A. Kidwai commended the book for offering an authoritative Pakistani perspective on nuclear strategy, while Ambassador Qazi Khalilullah called it “a masterly account of nuclear South Asia,” stressing its relevance for policymakers, strategists, and the youth of Pakistan. Senator (R) Javed Jabbar praised the book as “a vital resource for understanding the development of Pakistan’s nuclear policies,” noting its insightful exploration of the challenges and strategic choices that shaped the country’s nuclear deterrent. Ambassador Akram described the book as a testament to Pakistan’s resilience and determination in securing its sovereignty.

He expressed hope that it would serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and the younger generation in understanding the importance of strategic deterrence for maintaining peace and stability. The event also featured a panel discussion on the book’s themes and its relevance in today’s geopolitical landscape, attended by esteemed academics, diplomats, and media representatives.
