217 new cases reported in past 24 hours Dengue claims 6 lives in City

The dengue hemorrhagic fever continued taking its toll on the public health and claimed six lives here in Lahore during the past 24 hours.

According to the Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Secretary Imran Sikander Baloch on Sunday, five patients of mosquito-borne dengue fever died in the provincial metropolis while one succumbed to the virus in the neighbouring Sheikhupura district.

The health secretary informed that the deadly dengue virus has claimed 118 lives during the current season so far across Punjab.

He further said that as many as 279 cases of mosquito-borne fever were reported across Punjab province, out of which 217 dengue cases were reported in Lahore.

“A total number of 23,576 dengue virus cases have been reported across Punjab so far in the current year,” Imran Sikander Baloch added.

He further informed that currently there are 1,378 patients of dengue hemorrhagic fever undergoing medical treatment in various hospitals of Lahore.

He pointed out that dengue larvae surveillance activities have been intensified across the province, adding that the officials inspected 11,70 sites across Lahore and destroyed larvae from 256 locations in the City.

He appealed to the public to extend cooperation to the government to elimination dengue virus and protect public from the disease.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has rapidly spread in recent years around the world.

These mosquitoes are also vectors of chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika viruses. Dengue is widespread throughout the tropics, with local variations in risk influenced by rainfall, temperature, relative humidity and unplanned rapid urbanization.
