ISLAMABAD – Zong rejected reports claiming that around 150 employees at its Islamabad office recently lost their jobs, calling these reports “baseless,” “inaccurate” and “unsubstantiated.”
The reports alleged that massive number of employees at telecom operator’s Islamabad headquarters were affected by sudden job cuts, with some accounts suggesting that long-serving workers were among those impacted. However, when contacted for comment, Zong dismissed the reports and said the claims published by a section of the media were inaccurate and unsubstantiated. The company declined to comment further.
The reported layoffs attracted attention amid broader changes taking place across the global telecom and technology sectors, where companies have been reviewing operations, controlling costs and adjusting their workforces in response to changing market conditions and rapid technological developments.
Some accounts circulating online had claimed that around 150 employees at Zong’s Islamabad office were affected but Zong has not confirmed the reported figure.
One account shared online by an alleged affected employee claimed that they had spent 14 years with Zong, including working weekends, public holidays and at times while unwell. The individual described the reported end of their employment as disappointing after more than a decade with the company.
There were also claims online that affected employees were not offered severance or compensation packages. These allegations remain unverified, and Zong has not provided details regarding the claims.
Zong, which operates in Pakistan as CMPak and is owned by China Mobile, is one of the country’s major telecom operators, serving more than 50 million subscribers. The reported developments had also drawn comparisons with wider restructuring across Pakistan’s telecom sector, where companies are adapting to changing market conditions, increased competition and evolving technology.
For employees, however, any workforce restructuring can have a significant personal impact, particularly for those who have spent many years with an organisation. At the same time, the circumstances surrounding the reported Zong job cuts remain unclear.
With Zong rejecting the reports as inaccurate and unsubstantiated, there is currently no confirmed information that 150 employees were laid off from the company’s Islamabad office.
