Azerbaijan’s armed forces have liberated another town from Armenian occupation amid ongoing border clashes in Upper Karabakh, President Ilham Aliyev announced on Sunday.
“Today, the Azerbaijani army liberated the city of Jabrayil and some villages from occupation. Long live the Azerbaijani army. Karabakh is Azerbaijan,” Aliyev wrote on Twitter.
Earlier in the day, Turkey’s National Defence Ministry announced the liberation of the south-western territory. “According to the information obtained from reliable Azerbaijani sources; after the villages of Buyuk Mercanli, Maralyan and Sheybey, the Azerbaijani army also liberated from occupation the city of Jabrayil, which was of critical importance in the Karabakh region.” The operations launched by Azerbaijan’s armed forces with an aim to reclaim occupied territories continue, security sources said on the condition of anonymity.
Azerbaijan said on Sunday that Armenian armed forces had shelled its second city of Ganja in a major new escalation of the conflict in the South Caucasus.
Armenia leaders on Sunday feared the country was facing a ‘historic threat’ as the country reported heavy losses in the raging conflict at the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has intensified during the past month.
But denied that it fired towards Azerbaijan, but the leader of Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian enclave inside Azerbaijan, said his forces had destroyed a military airbase located in Ganja.
“Permanent military units located in the large cities of Azerbaijan from now on become the targets of the defence army,” said Karabakh leader Arayik Armenia also announced the deaths of 51 more separatist fighters, taking the number of fatalities on both sides above 240..— Anadolu Agency
