LAHORE – Pakistani social media users are facing disruption in WhatsApp, Instagram and other social media platforms amid protests of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members in capital city.
Users in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Attock, Jhelum Pakistan are facing problems while sharing pictures, documents and audio files using mobile data amid protests on Friday while those using DSL are facing no issues.
As messaging and social media disrupted affected Pakistanis, several users took to other social sites amid curiosity.
‘WhatsApp Down in Pakistan’
Internet and mobile services have been suspended in major Pakistani cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Karachi, ahead of a planned PTI protest at D-Chowk.
This disruption is part of increased security measures, with social media users in Karachi also affected. The Punjab government has enacted Section 144, banning political gatherings in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Attock, and Sargodha, with Rangers deployed for security. These restrictions will remain in effect until October 6.
Over the weekend, protesters have been arrested amid planned PTI rally at D-Chowk, with mobile networks and internet services suspended in the area.
Incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan called for peaceful protest, despite government ban on gatherings. Authorities have implemented strict security measures, blocking access to the cities and sealing roads leading to the Red Zone.
The federal government warned against the rally, emphasizing the need to protect public property and maintain order for high-profile foreign visits. Section 144 has been enforced, prohibiting gatherings in restricted areas. Islamabad Police also urged citizens to avoid illegal activities and adhere to traffic advisories.
