ISLAMABAD – A severe heatwave engulfed several parts of Pakistan as the temperatures soared across the country, particularly in desert and plain regions on Thursday.

Pakistan Meteorological Department said that the Cholistan Desert is experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures nearing 48°C in several areas. The intense conditions have created a crisis for local communities and their livestock.

The residents said that water reservoirs in Cholistan dried up which forced many to migrate in search of water and shelter. The ongoing heat also led to the deaths of numerous animals due to dehydration and heat stress.

The Met Office warned that the country’s plains would remain under the influence of a severe heatwave for at least the next four days. The situation is particularly alarming in southern Punjab, where the extreme temperatures are expected to persist for another two days.

The temperatures were recorded at 44°C in Lahore, with the heat index making it feel as high as 47°C.

Other recorded temperatures include Quetta: 31°C, Gwadar: 31°C, Loralai: 36°C, Khuzdar: 38°C, Turbat: 42°C and Sibi: 46°C

The authorities advised the public to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.
