ISLAMABAD – A fresh legal controversy has erupted after Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon served legal notice on Captain (r) Safdar over an alleged statement questioning the authenticity of his LLB degree.
The legal notice, issued by Kalam Law Firm on September 29, 2026, rejects the allegation that Bhoon’s law degree is fake, describing the claim as baseless, contrary to the facts and defamatory.
According to the notice, Ahsan Bhoon got his LLB degree from the University of the Punjab in March 1989 under Roll Number 828. The notice further cites Punjab Bar Council records, stating that Bhoon was enrolled as an Advocate of the Lower Courts on September 19, 1989, followed by enrollment as an Advocate of the High Court on February 22, 1992. He was later enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on July 19, 2003.
The legal notice highlights Bhoon’s more than three decades of legal practice, during which he has worked in criminal, constitutional, civil, corporate, commercial, banking and other areas of law. It also points to his record in the legal profession, stating that he has served as a member and Vice Chairman of the Punjab Bar Council, a member of the Pakistan Bar Council, President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. Bhoon also served as a judge of the Lahore High Court from February 9, 2008, to July 31, 2009.
He was elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association for 2021-22 and was also nominated as a member of Pakistan’s National Group at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
The notice further states that Bhoon was appointed a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan for the 2025-27 term and was elected for a fifth term as a member of the Pakistan Bar Council for 2026-2030.
A key point raised in the legal notice is the alleged verification of Bhoon’s academic credentials by the University of the Punjab. According to the notice, on January 21, 2026, the university’s Controller of Examinations verified Bhoon’s educational credentials during the Pakistan Bar Council election process and marked them “Verified.”
The controversy reportedly intensified on September 23, 2026, when questions were raised about Bhoon’s LLB degree during a public interaction outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The notice alleges that the degree was called fake during the exchange and that the statement was subsequently circulated on social media.
Bhoon’s legal team argues that no authentic documentary evidence, official record or competent authority’s decision was presented to establish that the degree was fake.
Through the legal notice, Captain (Retd) Muhammad Safdar has been asked to explain what evidence he possesses to support the allegation. The notice specifically seeks details of any original university record, decision by the relevant institution, Higher Education Commission record, Bar Council decision or order of a competent court that establishes the degree is fake.
It mentioned that if such authentic evidence exists, it should be produced. Otherwise, the alleged statement should be withdrawn. The notice also maintains that the validity of an educational degree cannot be determined merely through a public allegation, arguing that records maintained by the relevant university, examination authority, Bar Council, Higher Education Commission or a competent judicial forum are material to the issue.
The legal team has described the alleged statement as damaging to Bhoon’s reputation, dignity and professional standing, while seeking an explanation and appropriate remedy from Captain (Retd) Safdar.
The notice concludes with a warning that failure to comply with its demands could lead to legal proceedings and other remedies available under the law.
