Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi (KU), Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, officially inaugurated a physical therapy unit and a gymnasium at the KU Medical Center. During the ceremony, Dr. Iraqi emphasized the growing importance of physiotherapy in developed nations and its increasing relevance in Pakistan. He expressed that the new unit would not only benefit KU employees but also provide practical learning opportunities for students enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. “The more awareness people have about physiotherapy, the more beneficial it will be for both the field and the patients. Healthy activities are essential for maintaining good health, and we must allocate time for our well-being.
It is concerning that our society does not value this great blessing,” Dr. Iraqi stated. He further noted that health is often undervalued in society, despite being a significant blessing. Professor Dr. Basit Ansari, KU Chairman of Health Physical Education and Sports Sciences, and head of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, also addressed the gathering. He highlighted the vital role of physiotherapy in healthcare, especially for treating musculoskeletal pain, injuries, inflammation, and post-operative rehabilitation. “Physiotherapy is essential for managing conditions like neurosurgery recovery, pulmonary, cardiac surgeries, and various neurological and mental health disorders,” he added. Dr. Ansari shared that the center is equipped with essential facilities for physiotherapy, with plans for gradual upgrades. Currently, the center can accommodate six patients at a time for physiotherapy sessions. The event was attended by KU Senior Medical Officer Dr. Wafa Altaf, medical consultant Dr. Akmal Waheed, medical officer Dr. Hassan Auj, as well as faculty members, department chairpersons, and staff. All present at the event expressed optimism that these new facilities would serve as an important milestone in promoting health and well-being for the University of Karachi community.
