WASHINGTON  – After European Union and UK, the US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller on Tuesday expressed concern over the sentences handed down by military courts in Pakistan to 25 civilians.

Matthew Miller said that the Pakistani citizens were sentenced by military courts for their alleged involvement in the May 9 protests.

He highlighted that the military courts lack judicial independence, transparency and guarantees of justice.

Matthew Miller further urged the Pakistani authorities to respect the constitutional right to a fair trial and justice.

It may be mentioned here that the United Kingdom also reacted to the military courts’ decisions yesterday, saying that these courts lack transparency and independent oversight, undermining the right to a fair hearing.

Besides it, the European Union had also expressed concerns on December 21 regarding the military court’s sentencing of 25 civilians in Pakistan.
