A twin-engine turboprop plane crashed and caught fire late Friday night in Bedford as it approached for landing at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, killing the plane’s 23-year-old pilot.
Bedford police said the pilot has been tentatively identified as Emanuel Vomvolakis, 23 of Linden, Mich. There were no other people on board the plane.
Airport Director Ted Kitchens said the plane, a Swearingen SA226 operated by Castle Aviation, had departed from Essex County Airport in Fairfield, N.J., at about 10:50 p.m. Friday en route to Manchester.
It crashed at around 11:30 p.m. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash with the National Transportation Safety Board.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said Saturday morning that the plane’s engine failed on its final approach to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
