Federal Minister for Law and Human Rights AzamNazeerTarar said on Monday that the government was taking measures to stop gender-based violence.
Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the federal minister noted that gender-based violence was a very crucial issue, adding that the government was fully active against the heinous crime as the women deserved to live with honour and dignity.
‘Islam also stresses the need for the protection of women. There must be a balanced society where men and women should have equal rights. We need a society where every individual should take part for the prosperity of Pakistan. Our religion gives many rights to us, if we adopt practices of Islam then there will be no need to say anything,” he highlighted.
Underscoring the need to take strict action against those involved in violence against women and children, Tarar pointed out that Islam had made it clear for Muslims that a mother and sister must be given all the rights in a society.
“It is my duty as the federal minister for justice that I take responsibility for improving the human rights situation in the country. The Ministry of Human Rights has played a significant role in drafting new laws with input from international and national organisations,” he added.
The Ministry of Human Rights, under the leadership of Federal Minister Senator AzamNazeerTarar, hosted the Pathways to Equality event today at the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA), marking the beginning of the global campaign for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This event aimed to draw attention to the ongoing fight against violence towards women and girls and to reinforce the commitment of all stakeholders in creating a society free from gender-based violence.
The Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to international conventions such as CEDAW and highlighted the progress made through comprehensive legal reforms, including the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act 2021 and the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010.
The Minister also underscored the critical role of effective implementation of these laws, stressing that it is not enough to have progressive legislation; the laws must be enforced without delay. He noted that the Prime Minister has placed great importance on this aspect, ensuring that the government’s policies align with international standards while also addressing local challenges.
Parliamentary Secretary for Human Rights, Mrs. Saba Sadiq also emphasized on the government’s commitment to ending gender-based violence. She reiterated that the government is working tirelessly to implement key legal frameworks and create an environment where women and girls feel safe and empowered. She highlighted that the establishment of specialized gender-based violence courts, mobile courts, and helplines demonstrates the government’s dedication to ensuring swift justice for victims of violence.
The event brought together key stakeholders from across government, civil society, and international organizations, all united in the goal of ending gender-based violence and advancing equality. Art installations, performances, and thought-provoking discussions reinforced the theme of this year’s campaign and reminded attendees that equality, dignity, and freedom from violence are essential for all members of society.
