Sindh Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department, led by Provincial Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, has achieved significant progress in its month-long crackdown on drug trafficking. The operations resulted in the arrest of 16 suspects, the recovery of substantial quantities of drugs, and the seizure of a car and three motorbikes used in illicit activities.
In a performance report presented by Minister Chawla, the department detailed its efforts across Sindh, which included snap checks, intelligence-based raids, and other enforcement actions. Between November 8 and December 10, 2024, the department confiscated 4.55 kg of heroin, 28.43 kg of hashish (charas), 2.5 kg of opium, 2.535 kg of ice crystals, 3 liters of local liquor, and 50 ecstasy tablets.
The report revealed that seven cases were registered in Karachi, while Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad saw one, one, and two cases, respectively. Among the arrested, 10 suspects were apprehended in Karachi, two in Hyderabad, one in Mirpurkhas, and three in Shaheed Benazirabad. Highlighting recent successes, Minister Chawla stated that on December 7, the department conducted two major intelligence-based operations in Korangi and Kati Pahari, recovering over 2.5 kg of heroin and more than 5 kg of hashish. Chawla emphasized that efforts to dismantle drug networks are intensifying.
“The circle around drug peddlers is being tightened,” he said. He also noted the activation of intelligence networks and increased snap checks, particularly in Sindh’s border areas, to curb drug smuggling.
