Reconciliation still possible?

AMIDST the ongoing war of words between the government and the opposition parties following the no confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan, the federal ministers on Saturday tried to lower the political temperature, suggesting for a dialogue and reconciliation.

In a statement, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain asked the opposition parties to hold talks for the sake of democracy whilst talking to the media persons in Quetta, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid said the government and the opposition should move towards reconciliation.

The fact of the matter is that the government would not have been faced with a tough situation it is facing today, had it not closed the doors of negotiations with the opposition parties and opted for a more practical approach by taking along everyone.

Even those who once used to be very close to PM Imran Khan and contributed to his rise to power are now expressing their resentment of being sidelined by the party leadership.

This clearly indicates the very political strategy of PTI was flawed and now it has back lashed so much so that it is now being blackmailed by certain elements for its survival in the power.

At present dialogue or reconciliation appears to be a hard nut to crack but is not impossible provided there is a will and commitment.

The federal ministers suggesting for a dialogue and reconciliation must take the first step and approach the opposition parties.

This bitterness in politics should be reduced by toning down the language.Even if the opposition parties do not agree to withdraw the no confidence motion, even then every effort be made to ensure the process is completed in a smooth manner without any untoward incident.

There should not be the repeat of parliament lodges incident or any blame game should follow once the no-confidence motion is voted upon.

As we have been stressing in these columns, the political leadership needs to demonstrate maturity, sanity and sagacity for the sake of this country and democracy whilst rising above their petty political interests.

We still persist with our view that the government must be allowed to complete its stipulated period and let the people decide the fate of the PTI in the next general election.

Encouraging horse trading at this point in time may haunt the opposition parties in future when they will be in power.
