LAHORE — Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI’s power show in Kahna is underway with party caravans heading to Punjab capital for the show, despite blockades at major highways.
Imran Khan’s supporters and party leaders vowed to hold in Lahore, a strong hold of ruling PML-N. The Punjab government allowed gathering at Kahna from 3-6 PM, with over 3 dozen conditions, including maintaining public order and avoiding anti-state slogans.
Social media posts and TV footage show thousands of supporters traveling from KP and other regions, with some traffic disruptions reported on the Islamabad-Lahore motorway.
Provincial authorities warned that rally must end on given deadline. PTI accused authorities of a crackdown on its members, claiming dozens had been arrested in the lead-up to the event. Bokhari also criticized KP government for misusing public resources for the rally.
Khan’s party first planned to gather at iconic Greater Iqbal Park, but was redirected to Kahna along the Lahore Ring Road.
PTI leaders are also being detained under Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, as they are deemed a threat to public safety.
Punjab government’s 43 conditions for the rally include a public apology from Chief Minister Gandapur for a previous controversial speech and stipulations regarding the timing of the event. The government has indicated that it will make efforts to limit attendance from outside Lahore.
As preparations for the rally continue, the PTI remains determined to assert its presence in Lahore, despite the challenges posed by governmental restrictions and security measures.
