Protest demonstrations, rallies and marches were held in Muzaffarabad and other cities of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination, Day.

The events were aimed at reminding the United Nations its obligations regarding settlement of the Kashmir dispute. On this day in 1949 the UN had passed a resolution recognizing the Kashmiris’ right to decide their future by themselves through a UN-sponsored plebiscite. The Hurriyet leaders and activists held a protest rally at BurhanWaniShaheedChowk in Muzaffarabad to remind the UN of its January 05, 1949 resolution and other resolutions that called for settlement of the Kashmir dispute by giving the Kashmiris their birthright to self-determination. The protesters were carrying banners and posters bearing slogans “Kashmiris demand right to self-determination from UN,”

The protest rallies were also held in different areas of Neelam and Jhelum valleys, Mirpur, Kotli, Rawalakot in AJK and participants demanded of the UN to take steps for holding a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.

The participants of the rally were holding banners with slogans “Go India go back”, “We want a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir” and “We want freedom from India”. The protesters also raised high-pitched slogans in favour of Kashmir’s freedom from Indian occupation and against India.

The people of Jammu Kashmir, state on both sides of the line of control and rest of the world, on Friday commemorated the Right of Self Determination Day with the renewal of the pledge to continue their ongoing indigenous struggle, with full vigor for securing their legitimate right of self determination through implementation of the U.N resolutions passed this day 75 years ago in 1949.

This year too, the Day was observed when India abrogated the special status of the internationally-acknowledged disputed state of the Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir through scrapping article 370 and 35-A of her own constitution since August 05, 2019 sinister act by turning entire Indian Illegally occupied Kashmir valley into the world’s largest prison for the last over 04 years through confining freedom-monger innocent population in the bleeding valley of Kashmir into their houses and complete information blockade since the above bleak day of the history of the internationally-acknowledged.—INP
