PML-N stalwart Malik Ahmad Khan elected new Punjab Assembly speaker

LAHORE – Malik Ahmad Khan was elected as the new speaker of the Punjab Assembly on Saturday.

The session of the provincial assembly was held to elect the House’s speaker and deputy speaker kicked off over the weekend after a delay amid the protests inside the house.

Outgoing Speaker Sibtain Khan presided over the Punjab Assembly session with members of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) raising slogans against each other.

Malik secured 225 votes against Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) candidate.

Malik Ahmed Khan

Malik Ahmed is a seasoned politician belonging to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz. The 52-year-old was a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, from 2002-2007, 2013-2018 and from 2018-2023.

He hailed from Kasur, with roots in politics in his family. His father also served as MPA in the 70s and in upper house of parliament in the 90s.

Malik earned his Laws (Hons.) from the University of Buckingham, before entering politics. His political career started with Pakistan Muslim League (Q) winning 2002 polls from Kasur. Later, he joined Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) in 2012, and was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly in 2013 polls.

In 2024 elections, Ahmed secured 45012 votes. against PPP’s Malik Khurram Saleem in PP-179 Kasur 5.
