LAHORE – Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Friday that his government wanted to reverse the negative effect of rapid urbanization faced by Lahore at the cost of city’s green cover.
He expressed resolve after inaugurating the Miyanwaki urban forestry project at Jilani Park in Lahore under Spring Plantation drive 2021. The forestry project will be launched at 51 sites covering 153 kanal area in Punjab’s capital.
Terming smog a hazardous threat for people in Lahore, he said that previous governments neglected the environmental challenges.
The premier highlighted that the green cover of city has been reduced by 70 per cent during the last 12-13 years, causing dense smog that could reduce the lifespan by 6-11 years.
Imran Khan termed smog a “silent killer” adding that its effects could not be witness immediately as it slowly damage the public health.
“Today we have launched Spring Plantation to achieve target of planting 10 billion trees all over the c country.”
He also sought public participation in the drive, adding that it was mater of future generation and children.
Miyawaki is an urban forestry technique, which was invented by a Japanese botanist, mainly used in densely populated cities. The provincial government aims at making 51 locations and 153 Kanals of the area greener with this technique.

The prime minister will also chair a meeting on the provision of Universal Health Coverage in Punjab and the steps taken to increase the number of fruit and vegetable markets and bring down the prices of wheat flour.
