ISLAMABAD – In a major development to improve the internet speed, Pakistan’s internet cable would be connected today with a new 45,000-kilometer-long cable passing through Africa.

The  IT experts said that this cable has the capacity to transfer data at a speed of up to 180 terabytes per second, promising a noticeable improvement in overall internet speed, including for social media applications.

This initiative comes at a time when internet speed issues in the country are under constant criticism.

A few days ago, Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima also acknowledged that Pakistan’s internet speed does not meet the international standards.

The government’s coalition partner, the Pakistan People’s Party, had also strongly criticized the poor internet speed during a National Assembly session.

Member of Parliament Shazia Marri objected to the government’s Digital Nation Bill, stating that the claims of digital progress are absurd with such inadequate internet speeds.

The connection of the modern cable is expected to boost Pakistan’s digital development and provide faster and more stable connectivity for internet users.
