MELBOURNE – As Pakistan gears up for the second Test against Australia in Melbourne starting on December 26, the team management is considering changes in the playing XI, the sources said on Friday.

The potential alterations include the exclusion of injured fast bowler Haris Rauf, wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed, and all-rounder Faheem Ashraf.

In the aftermath of a challenging first Test, where Pakistan faced a comprehensive defeat, the team is reevaluating its lineup to enhance performance in the upcoming match.

Wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who faced criticism for his performance in the previous Test, is likely to be replaced by Mohammad Rizwan. The decision comes after Sarfaraz managed only seven runs with the bat and missed crucial chances behind the stumps.

All-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who contributed 14 runs and secured just one wicket in the first Test, may make way for another player to add strength to the squad.

Furthermore, the team will have to cope without the services of fast bowler Khurram Shahzad, who sustained fracture in his 10th rib and abdominal muscle tearing during the first Test. The injury ruled him out from the series.

The replacement for Khurram Shahzad is expected to be either Mir Hamza or Hasan Ali, both of whom have showcased their abilities in recent domestic matches. Mir Hamza, who made his debut in the Perth Test, impressed with a five-wicket haul.

However, the experienced Hasan Ali, returning after a successful stint in domestic cricket, is also under consideration to bolster the bowling attack.

While these changes were made to address the team’s shortcomings from the first Test, the management faced the challenge of regaining momentum in the series.

Pakistan will be eager to put up a stronger performance in Melbourne and level the series against Australia.

It may be mentioned here that decision to exclude Haris Rauf is a setback for Pakistan, considering his impactful debut in the Perth Test, where he claimed five wickets. The team will miss his services as they strive for a better outcome in the upcoming match.
