Pakistan continues to be one of the largest refugee-hosting countries in the world, with 3.7 million Afghan nationals living in the country.
According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees up to June 2023, only 1.33 million Afghan citizens living in Pakistan are registered, while 2.37 million are living without registration. Of the total Afghan refugee population, 68.8% live in urban or semi-urban areas, while 31.2% live in other rural areas.
Statistics up to June 2023 also show that the total number of illegal Afghan citizens living in Pakistan is 4,229,749.—INP
