LAHORE – The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested a key leader of banned militant outfit al-Qaeda in an intelligence-based operation in Gujranwala, a city in Punjab province of Pakistan.
CTD stated in a statement that Dr Aminul Haq Muhammad was a close aide of Osama bin Laden, who was killed in an operation years ago by the US forces.
The high-profile terrorist was living in Pakistan after getting fake documents. DIG CTD said Dr Aminul Haq was also included in the global terrorists list.
He said the key militant leader was present in Afghanistan in April 2024.
Who is al-Qaeda leader Aminu Haq?
Aminul Haq, who hails from Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, is an internationally designated senior al-Qaeda leader who previously headed Osama bin Laden’s Black Guard, a security unit dedicated to protecting bin Laden. He served as bin Laden’s security chief at the battle of Tora Bora in 2001 before fleeing to Pakistan.
He was listed on the terrorists list on 25 January 2001 (amended on 18 Jul. 2007, 16 Dec. 2010, 6 Dec. 2019, 8 Nov. 2022, 2 Feb. 2023).
