NICVD sets up CPU in KIHD

Adviser to CM Sindh for Law & Spokesperson and Administrator of Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab and Executive Director of NICVD Professor Nadeem Qamar on Friday inaugurated the 22nd chest pain unit (CPU) of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD).

“I had a dream that the KIHD in Federal B Area becomes a centre for the NICVD so that the residents of District Central and District East could also be provided state-of-the-art cardiac-care facilities near their abodes, free of cost,” Murtaza Wahab said after inaugurating the 22nd CPU in KIHD. Executive Director of KIHD Professor Riffat Sultana, Incharge NICVD Emergency Services Dr Zair Hussain, senior cardiologists and local government representatives from the area were also present on the occasion.

“After establishment of NICVD CPU in the KIHD, now we are be able to serve the people of Karachi more efficiently,” Murtaza Wahab said and added that the NICVD was the flagship programme of the Sindh government, through which top of the line healthcare facilities are being extended to the entire province, including the remotest areas such Mithi and other towns of Tharparkar.

“Now people from not only the entire Pakistan, including Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, but also from abroad are arriving at the NICVD Karachi and Sukkur to avail top of the line cardiac-care facilities,” he maintained.

On the occasion, Professor Nadeem Qamar said the NICVD’s Chest Pain Unit network had examined over 675,604 patients during the last 5 years, out of whom 246,228 were cardiac patients and 14,331 were having heart attacks, whose lives were saved by timely interventions.

“One a patient comes to our health facility, he or she becomes our responsibility. If the patient needs any intervention including angiography or angioplasty, he or she is immediately rushed to the main NICVD.”

“This is the most successful programme of healthcare anywhere in the world, which has saved such a large number of lives and also helped thousands of people to live a healthy life”.

“The CPU in KIHD is 17th Chest Pain Unit of NICVD in Karachi Metropolitan; Moreover, 1 Chest Pain Unit in Tando Bago, 1 in Ghotki, 1 in Jacobabad, 1 in Umerkot and 1 in Tando Allahyar, are functional and providing state-of-the-art cardiac care and treatment to patients at their doorstep totally free of cost.  From a single solo hospital, NICVD has been transformed into world’s largest healthcare network in short span of 5 years, included; 10 full-fledged hospitals and 22 Chest Pain Units”, said executive director of NICVD.

He maintained and added that NICVD in collaboration with the Government of Sindh is providing quality healthcare facilities to the nation totally free of cost; which are evident from establishment of Satellite Centers and Chest Pain Units in the province.
