Fear of reprisals from the Hindutva government of Narendra Modi and extremists in India, Netflix and Amazon are abandoning numerous projects and shelving productions that have already been filmed.

According to Kashmir Media Service, when the American streaming giants, Netflix and Amazon Prime, landed in India seven years ago, they promised to disrupt one of the most important entertainment markets in the world,” recalls The Washington Post in an investigation published a few days ago.

Streaming platforms had aroused the enthusiasm of creators and spectators, in particular because they escaped the censorship which applies to productions intended for cinema.

However, over the past four years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has tightened the noose on streaming platforms, in particular through a legal arsenal, in order to “have its say to say about Indian programs produced by Netflix and Amazon Prime,” adds the daily.—KMS
