Muslims in the Tahab area of Pulwama in occupied Jammu and Kashmir joined hands to perform the last rites of a Kashmiri Pandit neighbour.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Shrimati Chunni, an 85-year-old elderly woman, died after brief illness at her residence in Tahab village of Pulwama district.

The incident occurred when the Muslim community in Tahab learnt about the demise of their Kashmiri Pandit neighbour.

In a gesture that exemplifies the spirit of unity, scores of locals, predominantly Muslims, gathered to express their condolences and participate in the last rites.

“I have come here to express solidarity with the bereaved family. I want to tell everyone that we still continue to live like brothers and sisters,” said a resident of Tahab, highlighting the enduring bonds that exist in the community.

The sense of communal harmony was palpable as neighbours came forward to assist the grieving family in every possible way. From performing traditional Hindu rituals to lighting the pyre, the Muslim neighbours left no stone unturned in ensuring that the last rites were carried out with utmost respect and adherence to the deceased’s religious customs.

This act of solidarity has not only underlined the unity among the diverse communities residing in the region but also shattered stereotypes, showcasing the coexistence that has been a hallmark of Kashmiri society for generations.

People fostering such bonds in times of grief have left an indelible mark on the community, serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity that transcends religious differences.

In a world often marked by religious and cultural discord, the residents of Tahab have shown that empathy and shared humanity can bridge gaps and bring communities together in times of sorrow.—KMS
