First Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar said that the aid provided by international donors will alleviate urgent needs for a short period of time, but said that the ministries must work toward self-sufficiency.

Speaking at a ceremony held to celebrate the National Day of Farmers in the capital city of Kabul, Mullah Baradar said that a new agricultural plan will come into effect in the near future which will also benefit half of the Afghan population.

The new plan will pave the way “for irrigation of half of Afghanistan,” he said.

“We must work day and night and immediately bring a system that makes Afghans self-sufficient,” Mullah Baradar added.

The acting Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Abdul Rahman Rashid, vowed that they have been empowered to prevent many land seizers from seizing the government lands. The ceremony included an exhibition of Afghan-made products, where various types of products were displayed.

The exhibition was also attended by Afghan women who displayed their products.

“Our business has been broken. Our business has collapsed. Now, with this exhibition, we hope our business will get better,” said Farishta Hashimi, a participant.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, around 75 percent of Afghans are making their income through agriculture.—Tolo News
