ISLAMABAD – The government of Pakistan has appointed Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali as the new Secretary of Defence for 2 years.
The announcement was made on Friday, as the serving officer will take charge on October 1 and will work until December 31, 2026, coinciding with his retirement.
Lt Gen Ali is a seasoned officer who is currently serving as Quarter Master General at General Headquarters. He is bringing extensive military experience to his new role, and is also a distinguished recipient of the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, a prestigious award recognizing his contributions to the armed forces.
His appointment marks key moment for Pakistan’s defence leadership, as the three star general hold vast experience inc national security.

A notification issued by cabinet secretariat establishment division said Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali, Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), Arty, is appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Defence, for a period of two years and three months, with effect from 01.10.2024 to 31.12.2026, upon his retirement, with the approval of Prime Minister and until further orders.
Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali was among six major generals who were promoted to the rank of three-star officer in 2020.
