Following instructions from Mayor Karachi Barrister MurtazaWahab, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) has declared a rain emergency.
CEO KW&SC Engineer Syed Salahuddin has directed officers to remain on high alert in anticipation of potential rainfall. EngrSalahuddin emphasized that all Jetting Suction rodding sewer cleaning machines and dewatering pumps should be fully operational and ready at all times.
He instructed Superintending Engineers to stay within their districts and required Executive Engineers and their teams to remain in their respective divisions. Machinery is to be strategically positioned on key highways before the rains begin, and all water supply and sewerage pumping stations should be powered by generators in the event of electricity outages. He noted that the city’s sewage system is not designed to handle rainwater, leading to blockages when rainwater washes solid waste, debris, and garbage into the sewer lines.
To mitigate this issue, KW&SC is prioritizing the coverage of manholes on main roads, streets, and footpaths to prevent accidents. EngrSalahuddin urged citizens to avoid opening manhole covers to drain rainwater into sewer lines, as this can obstruct the flow of sewage and create significant problems.
