Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Monem Zafar Khan, has raised alarm over the deteriorating state of Karachi, highlighting that 70 percent of the city remains deprived of water, while political parties engage in power struggles over the governorship. Speaking at the inauguration of the Annual Sports Week 2023 organized by Gulberg Town Municipal Corporation, he criticized the ongoing governance issues and called for accountability of those responsible for the city’s plight.
“CEO of the Water and Sewerage Corporation admits that 70% of Karachi lacks water, yet the focus of the ruling parties—PML-N, PPP, and MQM—is on a tug-of-war for the governorship,” said Munim.
He pointed out that while citizens are losing lives in water tanker accidents, and street crimes claimed 107 lives in the past 11 months, no meaningful action is being taken. Monem also expressed frustration over the lack of accountability for poorly constructed roads that washed away during rains just four months ago, despite billions spent on their development.
“If the system needs fixing, then those looting the city and destroying Karachi’s peace must be held accountable,” he said. Commending Gulberg Town’s efforts, Munim lauded the Annual Sports Week initiative and urged students to engage in healthy activities. “Jamaat-e-Islami’s town chairmen are fostering education and sports, yet the current mayor refuses to support their efforts,” he added.
