The Ministry of Public Health said the number of persons infected with cholera has risen in recent months, although the number of patients has dropped compared to previous years.
According to Javed Hajir, spokesman for the ministry, the ministry has launched campaigns in several provinces of the country to create awareness about the hazards and to stop the spread of Cholera.
“Campaigns to raise public awareness of what to consider in their environment so that germs do not spread have been completed, and the results have been effective,” said Javid Hajir, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health.
“More patients who are infected with cholera are coming to the hospital,” said Faridullah Omari, an internal medicine trainer.
Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food and water, and if the affected are not treated promptly, it can lead to death.
Based on statistics of the Ministry of Health, the number of people infected with cholera from 2019 to 2022 are as follows:
In 2019, 219,258 infected
In 2020, 136967 infected
In 2021, 182479 infected
In 2022, 52397 infected
Ayesha, a 13-year-old girl who has been hospitalized in one of the country’s hospitals for two days owing to cholera, says she had found the cause of her illness.
“My father is hospitalized, I ate something outside and I felt bad and suddenly I had diarrhea,” said Aisha, a resident of Kabul.
“Suddenly I felt pain in my abdomen and as soon as the pain increased I came to the hospital,” said Farid, a resident of Kabul.
Some medical specialists offered suggestions for preventing the condition.
“Do not drink unhealthy water and food on the street. Before eating vegetables and fruits, wash them with clean water,” said Zuhra Popal, a nurse.
According to a recent estimate by the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately four million individuals are infected with the illness each year, with 143,000 people dying as a result of it.—Tolonews
