The High Court of Indian illegally occu-pied Jammu and Kashmir has quashed the Public Safety Act (PSA) filed against Kashmiri journalist Asif Sultan.

Justice V C Koul, quashing the detention order of Asif Sultan, directed the authorities to release him unless he is required in any other case..

In 2019, he received the annual John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award by National Press Club of America.

He is currently lodged in Agra Central Jail in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after being booked under draconian law, PSA.

Aasif Sultan, who has been incarcerated since August 2018, was granted bail by a court in Srinagar on April 05, 2022. However, he was immediately taken in for questioning by the CIK (counter-insurgency Kashmir – a unit of Indian police), after which he was again detained under the PSA. He was shifted to the Kot Bhalwal jail of Jammu, but he was later moved to Agra Central Jail in Uttar Pradesh. Before that, he remained lodged at Central Jail, Srinagar.—KMS
