HENRY Kissinger’s death has evoked a sense of nostalgia in China, symbolizing a bygone era of closer ties between China and the United States. China mourns the death of Henry Kissinger, hailing him as a “pioneer and architect of China-US relations” for his instrumental role in establishing bilateral ties.

Henry Kissinger played a fundamental role in shaping US-China relations during a pivotal period in history. Serving as the National Security Advisor and subsequently as Secretary of State during the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, Kissinger was a key architect of the US policy of rapprochement with China in the early 1970s as he engaged in secret negotiations, including “ping-pong diplomacy,” leading to Nixon’s historic 1972 visit to China and the Shanghai Communique. His efforts had significant geopolitical implications by shifting the Cold War balance, isolating the Soviet Union, fostering economic ties ultimately normalizing diplomatic relations in 1979. Despite varying opinions on Kissinger’s approach, his impact on US-China relations remains historically significant.

China has sought to emphasize this era of engagement, marked by Kissinger’s influence, as a counter to what it perceives as the Biden Administration’s efforts to contain and compete with China. While celebrated in China, Kissinger’s legacy is viewed less favourably in Taiwan, where he is criticized for shifting US diplomatic relations to Beijing from Taipei.

China’s President Xi Jinping and senior officials expressed condolences to US President Joe Biden and others following the passing of veteran US diplomat Henry Kissinger, emphasizing his role as a pioneer and builder of China-US relations. Kissinger’s historic contributions to normalizing China-US relations were also acknowledged by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

China has called for carrying forward Kissinger’s strategic vision and promoting the sound, stable sustainable development of bilateral relations, recognizing his understanding of China’s historical context and the importance of transcending isolation. Kissinger’s death garnered widespread attention on Chinese social media, where he is remembered as an influential figure where he was regarded as a figure who comprehended and supported the Chinese people. Despite growing tension, Kissinger’s advocacy for positive engagement to avoid conflict remained a prominent aspect of his legacy in the eyes of Chinese leaders and media.

Kissinger’s last visit to China in July 2022, where he was granted a meeting with President Xi Jinping, was seen as a symbol of “old friends’ diplomacy” by Chinese state media.

Global leaders offered tributes to former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger following his death, acknowledging his role as a skilled defender of US interests. While figures like former President George W. Bush praised Kissinger’s contribution to foreign affairs, social media also saw criticism labelling him a war criminal. China, where Kissinger is remembered as a key figure in establishing US-China relations, expressed condolences. However, Kissinger’s death has elicited varied reactions globally, reflecting the polarizing nature of his legacy. While supporters praised his realpolitik approach and geopolitical contribution, critics denounced him as a war criminal responsible for actions in Vietnam War, Cambodia, Chile, Cyprus, Iran Pakistan. Leaders worldwide acknowledged his impact, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasizing Kissinger’s historical influence. China mourned his passing, highlighting his role in the normalization of US-China relations. However, diverse perspectives emerged, underscoring the complex and controversial nature of Kissinger’s foreign policy legacy.

Henry Kissinger’s role in these diplomatic efforts has had a lasting impact on US-China relations and the broader geopolitical landscape. While his approach has been both praised and criticized, there’s no denying the historical significance of the thaw in relations that he helped engineer.

It is important to note that Kissinger’s death has also rekindled discussions about the complex nature of his legacy. While celebrated for his diplomatic achievements, particularly in the US-China context, he faces posthumous criticism, particularly on social media. Some critics highlight his involvement in controversial actions, such as the expansion of the Vietnam War and alleged support for oppressive regimes.

The question arises whether Kissinger’s death signals the end of an era in US-China relations. His unique role as a diplomatic bridge between the two nations, marked by his deep understanding of both cultures, may leave a void. Kissinger’s death comes at a time when US-China relations face challenges, including geopolitical tension, trade disputes ideological differences. The hope in both countries is that leaders can build upon Kissinger’s legacy, maintaining dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of global peace and stability.

Nonetheless, the death of Henry Kissinger serves as a moment of reflection on the past and future of US-China relations. While his contributions are acknowledged and celebrated, the evolving dynamics between the two nations will shape the trajectory of their relationship in the post-Kissinger era.

The hope in both the United States and China is that leaders can build upon Kissinger’s legacy. This entails maintaining open dialogue and cooperation despite the existing challenges. Kissinger’s approach to diplomacy emphasized strategic engagement leaders may seek to emulate his ability to navigate complex international relationships. The goal is to ensure that US-China relations continue to contribute to global peace and stability. In essence, Kissinger’s death prompts reflection on the lasting impact of his diplomatic endeavours and whether succeeding generations of leaders can sustain the constructive aspects of his legacy amid evolving global dynamics.
